I have spent so much time in hotels recently – away delivering training courses. Its been fab for catching up with commissions and for building up my wildlife art portfolio.
Anyway, this is Georgie my latest equine commission. The lighting isn’t spectacular as I was in a hotel room and the images were taken using an iPhone. Lesson learned for next time – take your camera Jilly!
Anyway, hope you enjoy the step by step.
Outline is sketched using white sketching pencil
I start to add dark areas to define the basic shapes in the head
Rough lighting on this one, but you can see I’m continuing to develop form with stick pastels
Blocking in the base colours nicely – still with the stick pastels, Unison
Now I’m starting to define the muscle structure as well as starting on the background areas
Adding a blue underpainting to the timber to develop the ‘silvered’ look of the boards
Strengthening the darks and loosing a few of the edges under the jawline
Having blocked in the base colours I can start adding details with harder pastel pencils
A little more work on the background
Getting there

A much better quality image
Close up of the many layers that build up the definition in Georgie’s face
